Tips on losing weight with diabetes

Diabetes and obesity are related, with about 9 out of 10 obese people suffering from type 2 diabetes. By 2010 the number of British people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is set to double and figures are estimated at 3 million.

Diabetes and obesity are responsible for increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure and strokes. Lack of exercise, poor diet and overeating are major factors of type 2 diabetes. A sensible healthy diet and exercise plan could make a big difference, as just a small weight loss can mean a reduction in diabetes medication, and a lower risk of heart disease and blood pressure.

The type of diet recommended for type 2 diabetics is one that's low in fat, high in fibre and low in GI foods. Wholemeal brown bread, brown rice and whole grains are examples of low GI foods. GI stands for glycaemic index and determines the rate at which carbohydrates are absorbed into the blood stream.

High GI foods cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels resulting in fluctuations in blood sugar levels and insulin. Low GI foods are absorbed slowly and stabilise the blood sugar levels. This will make you feel more satisfied and less likely to snack between meals.

Fibre helps to delay the absorption of sugars and helps you to feel full quicker. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit as well as beans and pulses.

Drink at least 2 litres of water a day, as this will not only rid your body of toxins but also make you feel full. Often thirst is confused with hunger.

Byetta is a diabetes drug which is injected before breakfast and evening meals and has been shown to not only stabilise blood sugar levels but also causes weight loss.

Byetta is good news for anyone who is diabetic and obese. It works by making the rate at which the stomach empties slow down and also produces a sense of fullness.

It's advised for people to inject Byetta about an hour before eating so that it gives it chance for the fullness sensation to take effect, therefore encouraging you to eat smaller portions at meal times.
