Yoga - Fitness for All

by Frann Leach

You can use Yoga to strengthen and refine your body and relieve stress, with gentle stretching movements. And you don't have to buy lots of expensive equipment - all you really need is a mat.

Looking for something else?
Google

Yoga is a great method for someone who has asthma or shortness of breath and for those with arthritis and other disorders that cause stiffness.

There are several different types of Yoga. The one which most people think of when they hear or say the word is Hatha Yoga. Other types of yoga are not exercise-related.

With yoga, you build up gradually - unlike some other forms of exercise, where you are often advised to push past your limits.

As you go through the poses in turn, if you cannot complete any of them, you push just to the point where it begins to feel uncomfortable, and then stop and move on to the next. By continuing to practise each day, you will find yourself getting closer and closer to the perfect form, until one day, you're picture perfect!

How to start Yoga - Lesson 1

Stress at work, needing a boost, want to find time for myself - these are some reasons why people come to look at Yoga as a solution. (Apart from the celebs talking it up all the time!)

First question is often:

What does it offer?

It offers a great way to balance the body and mind, to be shown beneficial tools that handle stress. To encourage confidence, well being and self esteem.

Then maybe...

How can it help me?

In ways you never have imagined. But initially you will experience a whole new way of being and begin to appreciate that there is more to life than struggle and stress!

Will I lose weight and tone my body?

If the body needs to lose weight, it will. if the body needs to put on weight, it will. You will definitely tone yourself. Yoga restores balance and wellbeing, so what you need, you get.

It really does all of these and so much more.

So how do I start?

Get yourself a good mat and bag. A mat is essential to give you a good surface to work on. You will find that every time you step on in you'll really feel like doing yoga - and a good yoga bag keeps it clean, snug and easy to carry.

Find yourself some really comfortable fitness clothes to work out in. Something that is non-restricting, looks good, feels good and allows you to move freely and easily.

Listen to some great relaxation music to melt the stress and let go of troubles and care.

Find yourself a yoga holiday and join others for serious fun.

But always remember - life is for living and needs to be enjoyed - every moment!

Use this Ancient Teaching to Enhance Your 21st Century Life

According to legend, Yoga was created by the god Krishna, and it is certainly very old, having been practised for some 6,000 years!

In India, it has been used as a treatment for an amazing list of ailments, including Asthma, constipation, insomnia, obesity, arthritis, sciatica and varicose veins, to name but a few. In the West, it is used mainly for fitness and as a means of reducing stress.

Start out Right

Yoga is a really wonderful teaching, but to start with, it is best, if you can to go to a class with a qualified instructor who can reassure you that you are doing the movements correctly - or show you how to improve. Do check that the instructor is fully trained, though.

If you really can't get to a class for one reason or another, or if you would like to see how it's done from the comfort of your sitting room, there are many videos available. Yoga-ez has a great selection to choose from.

I definitely do not advise learning yoga solely from a book. However, there are books that can help you, as an additional learning tool, for example Yoga Health Secrets. This downloadable ebook sets out absolutely everything you could want to know in an easy to understand way. Not just forms and postures, but diet, health tips and tips for relieving stress, it's all there.

Yoga is fun to do, uses nothing more expensive than a mat, and can be done in the privacy and comfort of your own home (once you have a basic feel for the forms). Why not give it a try today?
