Relieve Stress the Natural Way with Meditation

As little as 10 minutes of meditation a day can reduce your stress, increase your emotional stability, and help you get back in control of your life.

Vipassana meditation, or 'Mindfulness of Breathing' is a very simple technique, taught by the Buddha over 2,500 years ago. It is the basis for many meditational practices used in medicine and healthcare in the 21st Century. It is also the easiest to learn, and in my opinion, the best type of meditation for stress relief.

If you are on tranquillisers or other medication, keep in touch with your doctor, as you will probably find that your dosage can be reduced after you have been practicing for some time.

Do not simply stop taking your tablets without consulting with your GP first. Some treatments need to be reduced slowly, under medical supervision, to avoid distressing side effects.

The best way to get started is to enrol in a class. You will find classes in Mindfulness of Breathing at any Buddhist centre. (Although Buddhism is usually classified as a religion, it's really more a series of techniques for happy living. Many people who practise Buddhist meditation are followers of other religions, so you don't need to worry that anyone will try to indoctrinate you.)

Do make sure the class you choose is for Mindfulness of Breathing or Vipassana meditation. This type of meditation is completely safe. Don't sign up for a class in Transcendental Meditation if you are trying to reduce your stress levels.

How does it work?

This type of meditation does not involve any use of pictures or other aids. All you need is a cushion or a chair.

How often have you wanted peace and quiet, close the door and let the madness of life stay outside?

Yep, me too - often!

Well. giving space and time for 'quiet time' and meditation is precisely what this is about.

It's not that difficult to acheive, once we gift ourselves the commitment - and let's face it - that is half the battle.

First thing to do is create a space (even if it is small) - somewhere that becomes special and 'your place'. This way when you enter it the intention is firmly marked throughout it - to go within and seek stillness.

Find some soothing, peaceful relaxing music to set the mood. The right music 'speaks' to that part of us that encourages the alpha waves to take over. (These are the brain's currents to induce the meditative state.)

Maybe you fancy come special lighting or candles, perhaps some incense to create the right ambiance. Great incense tends to clear the space of negative vibes and bring calm to any space.

Then sit comfortably, take a deep slow breath, exhaling slowly and allow the mind to become still.

Now that is far easier said than done, so the best idea is to get help from the real professionals and let them guide you through the process.

After a little practice you will find that the rush and panic of life, the stress of the outside world dissolves into a blissful stillness...peace at last!

.... if you really want to immerse yourself all the way, why not try a free 3/10 day meditation wherever you are in the world. (Be warned - it demands total silence but the effects are great!)

If you do want to go more into the 'religious' side of meditation, the book I recommend, which really helped me to understand, is "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche. You can also get this as an audiobook.

But whether you're interested in the philosophy behind it or not, meditation is one of the best, safest and cheapest ways to relieve stress. You don't have to pollute your body with chemicals.

I used to be totally stressed out all the time, my temper was appalling, and I suffered from frequent panic attacks. After I started meditating, my life turned around. I've never looked back.
