If you are on tranquillisers or other medication, keep in touch with your doctor, as you will probably find that your dosage can be reduced after you have been practicing for some time.
Do not simply stop taking your tablets without consulting with your GP first. Some treatments need to be reduced slowly, under medical supervision, to avoid distressing side effects. |
The best way to get started is to enrol in a class. You will find classes in Mindfulness of Breathing at any Buddhist centre. (Although Buddhism is usually classified as a religion, it's really more a series of techniques for happy living. Many people who practise Buddhist meditation are followers of other religions, so you don't need to worry that anyone will try to indoctrinate you.)
Do make sure the class you choose is for Mindfulness of Breathing or Vipassana meditation. This type of meditation is completely safe. Don't sign up for a class in Transcendental Meditation if you are trying to reduce your stress levels.

If you do want to go more into the 'religious' side of meditation, the book I recommend, which really helped me to understand, is "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche. You can also get this as an audiobook.
But whether you're interested in the philosophy behind it or not, meditation is one of the best, safest and cheapest ways to relieve stress. You don't have to pollute your body with chemicals.
I used to be totally stressed out all the time, my temper was appalling, and I suffered from frequent panic attacks. After I started meditating, my life turned around. I've never looked back.
