Researchers were baffled for quite some time at the French nation. Here was a huge group of people who smoked the strongest cigarettes known to man, ate food drowned in copious quantities of butter and cream, and yet the statistics showed them to be remarkably healthy.
One factor is the amount of garlic consumed by the average French man and woman. And here's another: a substance found in red wine that fights many of the causes of ill health in the West.
Resveratrol is a phytoalexin found in over 70% of plant species worldwide. However, unlike other plant substances beneficial to human health - like beta carotene - resveratrol can only be found in trace amounts in most. It can be found in good concentration in grapes, some berries, pine nuts and Japanese knotweed (a plant which is banned in some parts of the world), cultivated for the production of many of the resveratrol supplements on the market today.
It has also been found that because red wine is fermented longer than white (thus the resveratrol in the grapes used in production becomes more potent), a very good amount of resveratrol can be had from red wine. However, resveratrol in fruits and wine can only be beneficial if taken in huge amounts - you either end up feeling bloated or getting drunk. With natural resveratrol supplements, you can get at least three times the amount of resveratrol you can get from wine and grapes.
Resveratrol has been found to be beneficial in the prevention of the spread of carcinogenic cells. There has also been positive feedback from researchers that are studying the possible properties of resveratrol in the cure of cancer. Aside from that, Resveratrol is also beneficial in the prevention of cardiovascular ailments - one of the leading causes of death in the society today.
Do you want to have more energy and feel younger? Then resveratrol may be the answer you are looking for. Aside from being an antioxidant, anti-carcinogen, and anti-cardiovascular diseases, resveratrol has also been found to help in the prevention of fat accumulation in the body. It is also helpful in the avoidance of strokes, and some debilitating illnesses associated with old age like Alzheimer's disease.
Additionally, resveratrol has also been linked to increasing athletic performance. This does not necessarily mean that you can only benefit from resveratrol if you play sports, but it does mean that you will have more energy available.
In a recently concluded experiment with mice, resveratrol-infused mice ran twice the regular distance they could run without resveratrol before stopping because of exhaustion. The mice had stronger cells because resveratrol has the ability to help muscles oxygenate better. Also, resveratrol, while helping the body use up fats for energy, inadvertently helps the mitochondria in the muscles multiply faster. Mitochondria are what keep muscles energized and active.
To feel younger, isn't staying power a good indication? Aside from that, resveratrol helps keep sirtuin (a substance important to delaying aging) healthy, thus keeping us looking and feeling younger for longer.
Resveratrol also inhibits the virus that causes influenza from replicating in the body. No flu, more staying power, and stronger, more energetic muscles - what more can you ask for?
