Preheat oven to 220º C (450º F, gas mark 8).
Rub joint all over with the butter and sprinkle with salt.
Roast for 30 minutes at 220º C (450º F, gas mark 8), reduce heat to 210º C (425º F, gas mark 7) and roast for a further 1¼ hours, basting occasionally.
