1 peeled onion with 2 cloves stuck into it 350ml (¾ pint) milk 90g (3 oz) fresh white breadcrumbs (without crusts) salt and pepper 15g (½ oz) butter |

Put the onion with the cloves into the milk, heat gently to boiling point, take off heat and leave to stand, covered, for 30 minutes. Remove onion and cloves.
Stir in the breadcrumbs, seasoning and butter. Reheat and serve immediately.
